So its been a while – I’ve had to give The Homelanders a miss for a while as Ive been teaching full time and haven’t really had the time to devote to it. I thought as a way of getting back to regular posts  I would share some of my students work with you. My year 11 class has just finished a project in which they had to re-design the school canteen. They did great jobs as novice architects and stage one complete in developing a love and passion for the built environment. The brief for the project was to design an eco-friendly canteen that would also be a space that students and teacher would enjoy using. I think they did brilliantly and they can be proud of themselves

Here are some pics of a few

A Pig Poof and a Stool for a Sit Down

Now here is something different to put your feet up on.

Created by Designers Yvonne Fehling and Jennie Peiz who live and work in Karlsruhe, Germany. In 2006, they founded their design studio and the brand “Kraud”. There designs are  a welcome change in an unexpected direction.

To me there work  perfectly balances quirky design with poetic symmetry and style. Need to put your feet up – why not on one of these. You can play around with its placement never having it sitting the same way

The poof cleverly named Still lives it is designed as an object for domestic space and I think it is adorable. Coming in flesh tones it blends in with contemporary styling with its upholstered traditional diamond quilting in leather and standing in front of us in a natural fashion.

A little bit of sculpture, luxury and toy all in one

“Stuhlhockerbank” is a series of seating for public spaces that approach users and viewers in an extraordinary way. The dividing lines between different types of furniture (chair, stool, bench) are eliminated as the three types blend. The results are immobile constellations that express a person’s inner stance in the particular situation.

Although the benches were designed for  large spaces like a gallery or atrium  I can see the smaller 2 seater fitting into a modern home with other contemporary furniture.

“For this furniture, human habits and the world in which we live played as strong a role as did discovering the hidden potential of customary everyday objects. Over and above the pure purposefulness of a piece of furniture, the objects come with narrative elements. They seem familiar and yet at the same time surprising, enhanced by a sensual and poetic dimension.”

Material: oak, oiled finish

Seat height: 46 cm

Fun Colours at Furniture Fair

There were two booths standing out amongst the biege and chocolate at the recent Furniture Fair both with their roots in far off lands and both full of colour and fun.

Mexican chair purple

These iconic Mexican beach chairs have found their way to Australia. I just look at them and think cocktails by the pool and 50s hotels by the playa.

We could all do with a little SHINE SHINE to lighten and brighten things up a bit.

SHINE SHINE has done just that by creating a range of fabrics drawing inspiration from African textiles: commemorative, political and religious – funky and fabulous – eclectic and eccentric. They sure do bring a smile to my dial.

The textiles capture the spirit and expression of contemporary Africa.

They are now available in Australia from Emily Ziz
